Quarantine Protocol Guide

The Quarantine Plan Generator creates a customized day-by-day protocol for isolating and treating new koi before they enter your main pond.

Why quarantine matters:

  • New fish can carry parasites, bacteria, and viruses with no visible symptoms
  • A single sick fish can infect an entire pond
  • Quarantine gives you time to observe, treat, and build confidence before introduction

  • Standard quarantine protocol:

  • Minimum 14 days for standard quarantine
  • 21-28 days recommended for high-value fish
  • Separate equipment (nets, buckets, siphons) for quarantine
  • Never mix quarantine water with main pond water

  • Common quarantine treatments:

  • Salt: 0.3% for stress reduction, 0.6% for parasite control
  • Praziquantel: targets gill and body flukes
  • Potassium permanganate or Proform-C: broad-spectrum parasites and bacteria

  • Water quality during quarantine:

  • Test daily: ammonia and nitrite must stay at zero
  • Daily water changes of 20-30% are typical
  • Maintain adequate aeration at all times
