Buying and Receiving New Koi

Adding new koi to your collection is exciting but requires careful preparation to protect both the new fish and your existing stock.

Before buying:

  • Research the dealer or breeder's reputation
  • Ask about their quarantine and health testing protocols
  • Inspect the facility's water quality and fish health
  • Never buy from tanks with sick or dead fish present

  • Inspection checklist when selecting koi:

  • Body shape: symmetrical, no deformities
  • Skin: no sores, ulcers, or raised scales
  • Fins: intact, no fraying or redness
  • Eyes: clear, not cloudy or sunken
  • Gills: bright red (not pale or brown)
  • Behavior: active, swimming with the group, good appetite

  • Receiving and acclimation:

  • Float the sealed bag in your quarantine tank for 15-20 minutes to equalize temperature
  • Gradually mix quarantine water into the bag over 30-60 minutes
  • Net the fish into quarantine -- NEVER dump shipping water into your system
  • Dim lighting and minimize disturbance for the first 24 hours
  • Do not feed for the first 24 hours

  • First week in quarantine:

  • No feeding day 1, begin small amounts on day 2-3
  • Daily water tests (ammonia, nitrite, pH)
  • Observe behavior, appetite, and physical condition closely
  • Photograph each fish for identification records
  • Begin quarantine treatment protocol if planned
